Institutional Capital Flows Depend on Robust Digital Asset Custody Standards

London-based Nickel Digital Asset Management, founded by former executives of Bankers Trust, Goldman Sachs, and JPMorgan, has released survey data showing 92% of institutional investors would likely expand digital asset allocations if custody and security frameworks matched traditional finance standards. Nearly one-third indicated they would be very likely to do so. The findings carry direct implications for NFT marketplace liquidity, where institutional participation remains structurally constrained by the same custody gaps the study identifies.

Allocation Thresholds and Barriers

The research polled more than 200 institutional investors and wealth managers across 11 countries. Security incidents register as a near-uniform deterrent: 87% of respondents said high-profile hacks, exchange failures, and DeFi exploits exert a very or quite significant influence on investment decisions, with only 1% reporting no impact.

Respondents ranked cybersecurity risks as the dominant obstacle at 46%, followed by custody and private key management at 43%. Price volatility and insufficient liquidity ranked as less significant constraints, a signal that structural, not cyclical, factors gate capital deployment. The ranking inverts the conventional retail-trader priority list, where volatility typically dominates the narrative.

Custody and Smart-Contract Standards

When asked which safeguards would most improve comfort levels, 38% selected asset manager-managed custody with independent oversight as the top preference. Regulated institutional custody with independent audits, comprehensive cyber insurance, and proof-of-reserves and proof-of-liability attestations also drew substantial support.

On smart-contract exposure, 57% would require audited contracts paired with ongoing monitoring before committing capital. The preference for continuous verification, rather than launch-time audit only, defines the institutional standard the study establishes — a threshold most NFT issuers and marketplace protocols have yet to meet at scale.

NFT Liquidity Read-Through

For trading desks and marketplace operators, the data reframes liquidity bottlenecks. Institutional NFT allocation is not blocked by order-book depth or floor-price volatility; it is blocked by the absence of audited custody rails and ongoing contract surveillance. Marketplaces integrating institutional-grade custodians, independent attestations, and continuous smart-contract audits are positioned to capture the capital the 92% signal intends to deploy. Parallel regulatory movement, including a reported SEC custody rule revision submitted for White House review, reinforces the direction of travel.

Actionable checks for market participants:

  • Audit any NFT platform's custody partner for regulated status, independent attestations, and insurance coverage.
  • Track proof-of-reserves and proof-of-liability disclosures as leading indicators of institutional readiness.
  • Prioritize collections and protocols publishing continuous smart-contract audits over those relying on launch-time verification alone.

Nickel CEO Anatoly Crachilov noted that infrastructure progress should not be confused with completion. "Digital assets still have some way to go before custody and security standards consistently match those that investors expect from traditional prime brokers and custodians," he said. "The opportunity for the firms that can bridge that gap is substantial."
